Off to Disney World for the Week — Maybe I can meet some Imagineers?

My family is taking our first long vacation in about 2 years.  We are taking our boys to Disney World before they go back to school.  I don't know who is more excited the boys or my wife and me.  My only time to the place was for our honeymoon 9 years ago. I would be interested in any Imagineers saw this post to meet up during our visit.  I know it is a long shot but who knows?  I am impressed with Walt Disney Imagineering and have read a few books about them (below).  So if anyone sees...

A Great View on Teamwork and Encouragement through Deceit

I read Susie Wee's blog all the time and keep up with her writings and I agree with her 99% of the time.  Her latest blog post really hit home with me since it deals with encouraging teams and team members through deceit.  Now I do not mean that you should deceive your teammate in a malicious manner.  What Susie gives as an example is her experience with running trails in the hills of Northern California and how her follow runners tricked her into running longer and higher than she had ever done in her life.  Was it malicious?  No...

Debugging ASP.NET 2.0 on Vista and IIS 7

I ran into not being able to debug ASP.NET 2.0 with Visual Studio 2005 on my Vista laptop with IIS 7 this week.  The error I was getting was "Debugging failed because integrated Windows authentication is not enabled. Please see Help for assistance." and when I looked around I found that the Visual Studio team had released a hotfix for my current need.  The article explaining the issue and causes is here.  The download for the hotfix is here. Be patient on the install.  It took a while to go through a multiple of installs on my laptop.

Visual Studio 2005 Best Practice — Build Database Projects Quickly and Easily

I have a method of creating and updating database projects in Visual Studio 2005 that I thought was common knowledge.  After asking a few coworkers if they knew how to update their database projects with this method and receiving no's, I thought I would blog about it and pass along some helpful hints and best practices. I work a lot with databases and especially stored procedures that are built to be used with business logic/data access .NET frameworks.  I enjoy working with databases and always create database projects to live with my .NET projects.  I am psychotic about keeping database projects...

West Michigan .NET UG Talk Tuesday Night 8/21

I gave a talk on Tuesday night covering the Acropolis project to the local West Michigan .NET User Group.  The talk went well.  I do need to flush out more diagrams to show the relationships between the constructs that the project provides.  I think that will push the talk to the point where everyone understands the purpose of the project.

Blogs Are Meant To Breath

Why do people always apply old rules to new ideas? Why do we take a great idea like blogs and apply the boring aspects of magazines, newspapers and books to them? Blogs and the power behind them allow this new conversation to breath. A Breathing Blog is a blog that has a life all its own and allows ideas to go in and out freely and without conscious work. Most people that create blogs only want to exhale and give their views and ideas to others. On the other hand, a blog that breaths will take ideas and its readers...

So what are Acropolis and Astoria projects and how are they connected?

There are a lot of great developer news coming from Redmond the last few months.  I wanted to take a look at three projects and explain what each projects covers and the impact they will each have on the .NET developer community.   Acropolis Homepage Download MSDN Online Documentation  Acropolis is the project by Microsoft to replace and build upon the Smart Client Software Factory and the Composite UI Application Block, also known as CAB.  Acropolis from my view is a framework to leverage the WebPart idea to Smart Client development.  It allows .NET developers to build loosely-coupled UI's...
